Antique Book,used, Genealogies of The Potter Families and Their Desendants In America To The Present Generation, with Historical and Biographical Sketches. Edited By Charles Edward Potter. Boston : Alfred Mudge & Son, Printers, 24 Franklin Street. 1888. The population which settled New England and made it prosperous and enlightened, was of heroic stock. A thousand panegyrics could not express a clearer and more comprehensive conception of its quality than this single sentence, from the Rev. William Stoughton's installation sermond, in the year 1668 : "God sifted a whole nation that He might send choice seed into the wilderness." Of such stock is the family to which this volume is dedicated, and in no other family have the devotion to principle, the self-reliance and self-respect to which the nation owes its birth, found more ample illustration. It is somewhat surprising that this work has never been undertaken before, for worthy material exists in such abundance that the chief difficulty which the compiler must encounter is the necessity of compressing it within modest proportions. Since Robert Porter sailed from England, in 1634, and with his associates, gave to the settlement of Warwick, in Rhode Island, the name which it still bears, there has never been a period in the history of the country at which the descendants have not been conspicuous in commerce and legislation, in literature, arts and learning, at the bar and on the bench, in the councils and ministrations of the church, and when their country needed them, upon the field of battle. etc. etc. Contents. 1. Robert Potter, of Warwick, R.I. and Descendants. Book also contains their Illustrations. Do not know the original cost of this book. Book measurements are, 11 1/8" by 13 3/4" by 1 1/4" inch thick. Book cover has some wear. Corhers are worn through outer material. Front book cover hinge has been repaired. Lower rear cover hinge has a 1 3/4" inch tear. There is worn and torn material on upper and lower edges of book end. Rear book cover color is discolored or fades. Inner pages are discolored. Front and rear covers inner hinges have been repaired. Title page hinge is torn 9 inches down from upper edge. The Illustration on page 2 of part 3 is loose from binding. Pages 25 to 28 including an Illustration of part 5 are loose from binding. There are other pages that are loose, but not detached. There are water stains mostly on hinge area of last few pages............................................Priced to sell!
