This auction is for an original set of Fifty-Nine leather bound volumes of " Revue des Deux Mondes " from 1851 to 1871. Includes the Table from 1851-1874. Edited by François Buloz. Published by Bureau de la Revue des Deux Mondes, Paris. Original 3/4 red morocco leather and marbled boards ruled in gilt. Decorative gilt spine with 4 raised bands with title and Volume number stamped in gilt. Marbled endpapers and edges. Ribbon page markers. Large and heavy volumes. 6 1/2 x 9 1/2" tall. An excellent addition to a Library, University, or Personal Collection. Displays beautifully on the shelf. The Revue des deux Mondes (English: Review of the Two Worlds) is a French language monthly literary and cultural affairs magazine that has been published in Paris since 1829. Set up in France following the suspension of censorship in 1828 and attained a critical influence in that country comparable to the great Scottish and English journals of the day. It was the first "modern" publication of the 19th century. François Buloz created and was its editor from 1831 to 1877, and established a tradition of excellence that attracted contributions from such literary eminences as Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve, Honoré de Balzac, Victor Hugo, Hippolyte Taine, and Ernest Renan. Also among the early regular contributors who established the review's reputation as an elite liberal vehicle of haute culture were Albert, 4th duc de Broglie, François Guizot, Jacques Nicolas Augustin Thierry, Ludovic Vitet, Paul-François Dubois, the literary critics Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve and Gustave Plache, and Jean-Jacques Ampère.
