Notes

An excellent large decorative kilim, rare for its size and condition in today's market. Unlike most kilims, this type is one of the few types woven in such unusually wide and desirable size, making it an excellent candidate for use as a home furnishing.

Fine ivory wool warps, such as those found in this Sarkoy kilim mark this as an older example. Cotton was used in later examples.

The design represents a well-balanced interplay between geometric and floral forms, avoiding the harshness of pure geometrics and the cliche sometimes present in purely floral compositions.

A bold meander of green leaves and vines alternates with classic cabbage roses in alternating colors on a tan border.

The dark-brown inner gaurd holds a simple geaometric leaf and vine meander, which which through a clever color arrangement achieves a distinct 3 dimensional illusion. The narrow outer gaurd is comprised of a running dog device in dark brown-black that interlocks with the tan main border creating interplay between the positive and negative spaces of the composition.. Ten small floral and leaf sprays arranged on the deep red field offset four brown-black minor and one major lozenge shaped lattice form with branching inner and outer star blossoms. Each minor lozenge surrounds a single pinwheel star motif at the inner top and bottom. The primary lozenge contains a large floral and leaf display.
