Notes

The Turkic Afshar tribe was exiled to Kerman in southern Iran in the 16th century by Shah Abbas after a losing struggle for autonomy. They are the dominant group within the region.

Thick extra cord reinforcements in the selvages.

This traditional 19th century design is peculiar to the Kerman region. Although woven in the 20th century, it is free from Indian floral or Kerman textile influences.

The field is a menagerie of domestic animals. The peacock in the form of Maliki Taus is the emblam of Zoroastranism from India to the Caucasus.
