Notes
Nomadic Turkmens usually leave weaving of tent bands and straps to girls and young women.
A 7,000 year old example of this type weaving was recovered at Catal Huyuk in Central Anatolia. Since design influences most often flow from the most restrictive techniques to freer techniques, (according to several researchers, including Marla Mallett) motifs originating on these warp substitutions pieces, along with cicim and zili brocading, account for the large proportion of tribal designs found in knotted pile rugs. "The importance of warp substitution weaving is much greater than the small number of surviving textiles suggest." M. Mallett.
