Type: Tent Band
Country of origin: Uzbekistan
Region of origin: Central Asia
Artisan's heritage: Turkmen
Date made: 1880
Period made: Late 19th Century
Size: 25'11" x 2'6"
Shape: Rectangle
Assembly: Flatweave, woven in one piece. Compound warp-faced, warp-substitution weave. In the pattern section, double warps of different colors are strung on the loom.
Technique: Warps used in the design are forced into a sinuous path by the interlacing wefts. The wefts get tighter as the weaving progresses, packed closely together so that they disappear.
Weft: Wool
Warp: Six patterned, flat 6" fringe braids ending in tassels on each end of Warp Fringe the band.
Design: The design options with warp substitution are severely limited, since warps of contrasting colors must be incorporated into the design early in equal proportions to maintain proper warp tension. Warps not used in the design soon begin to sag, and the weaver must adjust her design to incorporate them. Designs are normally limited to two colors in any warp position. Only certain kinds of patterning work well in warp-substitution weaves. Many kinds of centered motifs do not work well. This well-executed tent band has at least twelve distinctly different motif sets on it and variations Within several sets. Warp substitution is present between red and white on each side and between marigold and black in the middle. Two sets of colored warps, bla
Dye: Natural Dyes. The dye color combination suggests this is a Turkmen weaving.
Main color: Red
Additional colors: Marigold, brown-black, undyed ivory wool.
Quality: Excellent
Features: Very fine weaving. Hard surface handle. Crisp, precise designs. As artifacts from a disappearing nomadic culture, high quality old tent bands in good condition have become scarce and their value has increased dramatically in recent years. Even small fragments of certain old, exceptional bands have sold for thousands.
Condition: Excellent
Defects: Two small damaged areas on the edges. One missing tassel.

Notes
Nomadic Turkmens usually leave weaving of tent bands and straps to girls and young women.

A 7,000 year old example of this type weaving was recovered at Catal Huyuk in Central Anatolia. Since design influences most often flow from the most restrictive techniques to freer techniques, (according to several researchers, including Marla Mallett) motifs originating on these warp substitutions pieces, along with cicim and zili brocading, account for the large proportion of tribal designs found in knotted pile rugs. "The importance of warp substitution weaving is much greater than the small number of surviving textiles suggest." M. Mallett.
