“Middle Air”

Photography by Raymond Meeks

Published by Raymond Meeks, Portland, OR, 2009

First Edition, First Printing

Offered here SIGNED by the Artist and in AS NEW condition is Raymond Meeks' “Middle Air,” published in 2009 by the Artist himself. This new artist book was published in an edition of only 40 copies, signed and numbered, with two SIGNED prints. The silver gelatin prints are printed on paper measuring 8 x 8 inches, and the images measure 7.5 x 7.5 inches. Raymond Meeks has produced a number of these rare artist books, using different techniques and subject matters to create striking effects. In “Middle Air,” Meeks presents simple photographs of his son mowing the lawn. These touching black-and-white images exemplify photography's ability to capture a single moment in time. A decidedly personal work, the book also features original text written by Meeks.

From the Publisher: “'Middle Air' is a sixteen page artist book that traces the routine cutting of a sparse section of lawn in the backyard of our home in rural Montana. Our son, Adam, was fifteen and not keen to yard work or gas-powered mowers. How is it that these pictures trigger such great feelings of loss for me now, one year later? Memory is an undeniable force behind making art, the drive not to forget, documenting the events of our lives over and over again, longing to fill the void of what's missing. The eleven pictures were printed in the order they were exposed (from one roll of 120 mm film) and are a witness to the everyday, prosaic and all that passes as unremarkable. The hard, mid-day light on the back of my son recalls, for me, an assurance I’d had when he was still a boy- how wonderful he is in this world. Each book will contain 'elements' (drawings, marking, etc.) unique to the moments prior to their preparation for shipping.”

This is a SIGNED softcover book in AS NEW condition with French folds and stiff paper wraps. It contains 20 pages with 11 black-and-white photographs, as well as text by Meeks, and comes with 2 prints. The book measures 8.5 x 4.25 inches.
