Wrap-around "Nantucket Sleigh Ride" scene by Mike Cyra on a 12.3-ounce, 3-inch high, whale tooth "skirt" discard.
First view shows the longboat "fast to a whale" (under tow), with the whaling ship in background.
Second view shows the same whaling ship in background, and the submerged bull Sperm whale towing the longboat.
Victorian-era scrimshanders often trimmed-off the skirt of a large whale tooth so that tooth would stand for self-display. The skirt was often discarded.
The highly polished base reveals the growth lines found in every whale tooth. This 12.3-ounce "skirt discard" must have come from a tooth heavier than 32-ounces, and longer than 8-inches.
The original sketch is made to same scale as blank space on tooth: 2.25-inches high x 8-inches around.
