OPEN THE GATE AND ROAM CABARRUS WITH US

Adelaide and Eugenia Lore

1971.  Presumed FIRST EDITION (not indicated on copyright page).  Self-published.  Hardbound (8-1/8 x 10-1/4"), 128 pages.  Numerous b/w illustrations, almost totally photographs, and one map.  Complete with ERRATA sheet.  The authors' signatures are found on the front free endpaper.

This book very rarely is available for purchase.  AND - this one is signed by the authors!  What an amazing estate sale find!!!

Sisters Adelaide and Eugenia Lore were aficionados of the local history of Cabarrus County, North Carolina. They devoted their lives to researching their own genealogical lines and the genealogical lines for others as well as historical events that occurred in Cabarrus and surrounding counties.  They transcribed many records from microfilm, read countless cemetery markers, visited numerous historic sites, and wrote items detailing family genealogies as well as architecture and early medicine in the county.

In this thoroughly fascinating book, through both text and photographs, the Lores presented a history of Cabarrus County with an emphasis upon its old homes but also including store buildings and inns.  They personally visited as many of these structures as possible, taking photographs and writing short sketches for each.  Some of the photographs in the book are vintage shots obtained from family archives.

Of course, now nearly forty years following the publication of this book, it is likely that many of the buildings featured in the book no longer exist except in memory and photographs.

Many of the homes date to the 18th and early 19th centuries, and some of these had licenses to function as taverns, providing overnight lodging to travellers.  The Lores were able to examine a number of these homes, some of which had separate rooms for lodgers.

The oldest home in the county was built in 1773 as the home of Captain Archibald and Margaret McCurdy, both of Revolutionary War fame.  The photograph of this home is a family photo taken many years ago prior to any restoration.

After a general introduction to Cabarrus County and its early history, the book, basically, is a tour of the County by quadrants plus the town of Concord.  For each quadrant, there is a text providing information regarding early churches, graveyards, and historical events.  Of course, this leads to photographs of houses and other buildings in that quadrant, with a short descriptive text accompanying each.  The final portion of the book has the same type of material for Concord and includes a map of the town as laid out in 1796 plus a floor plan for the two-story Mahan Tavern.

The book closes with a brief bibliography and an index.

The illustration in this listing is a scan of the actual book that is being offered for sale.

Recently purchased from a local estate sale, this book is in fine condition overall.  The hardcover with gilt design and titling (see scan) is in very good condition, with light 'bumps' to the upper free corners and a small amount of very light soiling.  The endpapers are in fine condition, with mostly clean, white surfaces with some very light tanning along the hinges and two very small light smudges on the rear free endpaper.  The pages (and the ERRATA sheet) are in extremely fine to like new condition with very clean, white surfaces, and they appear to be totally free of problems - having no corner folds, creases, tears, foxing, discoloration, or writing.  Overall, this is a fine copy of a seldom-available book!!!!
