
USS POWHATAN Civil War Ship memorial naval cover with pictorial postmark from Peterboro, NY on June 12, 2010. Blue image of ship printed on cachet #4258 by Alvin Eckert #9964 USCS. Cover franked with a 3 cent Army-Navy stamp and a 44 cent Florida State Flag stamp. The USS Powhatan, named for Pocahontas' Native-American father, was a 253' sidewheel steam frigate built in 1850 by the Norfolk Navy Yard. Commissioned in 1852 she served in Commodre Perry's fleet in the opening of Japan in 1853. During the Civil War she participated in the relief of Fort Pickens at Pensacola, the blockade of Mobile, AL, the blockade of the Mississippi River's Southwest Pass and the pursuit of the CSS Sumter in the West Indies.
