Notes

This Jade(Nephrite) is of a Baby holding a Bi coin on top of a Kylin. The symbolism here illustrates the two major religious influences in China history i.e. Buddhism and Daoism. This Jade is from the Ming Dynasty where the founder is from Daoist influence and so portray the older folklore of the Kylin bringing properous male babies to women. In the Qing dynasty, with Buddhism,it change to Guan Yin(Goddess of Mercy) carrying a baby boy and is usually in Dehua(blanc de chine)porcelain. The Jade is green and please note the intricate and unusual design of the jaws of the Kylin. Remember that Nephrite is Moh's hardness 6.5 and stainless steel is only 6.0 and so will not even be scratched by stainless steel knife. Jade artistry of old always and continously amazes and surprises!!

Note: The Kylin is also referred to as the Dragon Horse.
