The Liangzhu Culture is situated where Zhejiang and Jiangsu Provinces are i.e.on the East Coast where Shanghai is located. This Jade (Nephrite) Fish will be more meaningful, knowing that the territory of the Liangzhu includes the East Coast. Infact, archaeologists find houses on stilts in swampy areas. The above facts may explain the multiple variations of patina in Liangzhu Jades besides the usual Chicken Bone White (jigubia).
The Jade(Nephrite) Fish has a 'face'image on both sides;with the eyes concaved in,in the middle, which is difficult to fake. There is a pair of holes bored from both sides to meet in the middle for attachment.
The Liangzhu Jades are very collectable but also fake the most and this is the Culture Jades that I always recommend, must be seen and not from photos,if want to purchase. One must be technically more competent and experienced to detect fakes or authenticate as antique. Example in this Liangzhu Jade Fish, will have to consider Chemical Alteration and also Strata Geography.
Chemical Alteration :Briefly Jade(Nephrite) is not affected by the normal acids like Nitric and Hydrochloric Acid.Affected by Phosphoric acid.
Strata Geography: The more expert fakers will use old corroded Jade or their 'skin',but strata analysis will be able to dispel antiquity.
Sometimes a little knowledge is dangerous and thus there is no substitute for thorough and continous study, which is part of the joy of collecting.
Anyway a good website on Jade is Friends of Jade given in the llinks.
