Notes

This Collection is of Jade artefacts forming component(part of) of very elaborated pectoral pendant sets.In vogue with the elite and royalty during the Eastern Zhou(Warring States) and Han Dynasty.

This Jade(Nephrite) crouching rhinocerous is sculpted with powerful limbs and vigorous 'spirit' . The middle of body is filled with raised nipples,'carved' by lowering the surface;a very difficult technique. The Jade is translucent and the surface is dark red because of cinnabar and other chemical enhancement during burial.

A similar rhino but with complete pendant set was found in the tomb of The Prince of Nanyue(~122 B.C.), Guangdong,China of the Han Dynasty. Two other similar rhino plaques are in (i) Freer Gallery in Washington (Acc.no.32.43-44.Lawton.no.90) and (ii) in the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts (Acc.no.1943.50.469a.b. Loehr. 1975).
