Notes
An exquisite underglazed red Double Phoenixes ewer from the early Ming Dynasty of China.Very seldom see double phoenixes design and the uniqueness of this is that one is a male(yang) and the other is a female(yin) phoenix. This can be ascertained from the different tail patterns of the phoenixes. In all probability this Double Phoenixes ewer may have belong to the Wife of the Founding Emperor of the Ming (Hongwu) as the Dragon represent the Emperor and the Phoenix the Empress. The underglazed red porcelain are very rare and this ewer shows the characteristic smudging of the red outline and the slight blackish red from the early Ming where the copper and reduction firing was still not tightly controlled.Very fortunate that the cover for the ewer is intact and on it is also drawn a Phoenix. An incredible cultural heritage from the Han Chinese of the Ming Dynasty!!!
