This hanging stand is fully gimbaled, with a weighted center piece, so that no matter how far off-level a wagon (or ship) may roll, the small oil lamp (missing) will remain level and lit. The cage is to keep loose items from falling into the open flame. This type of lamp-cage is often hand-made.
