Notes
On stands now, February 16th 2007 through April 2007 To be sure, the city is a strange place. With millions of stories happening at any given time, its human denizens struggle to find distraction—anything to drown out the politicians, the arguments, the car alarms…the smog of it all. Which is precisely where Bloc Party come in. In light of their rabidly awaited sophomore release, A Weekend in the City, the band explores the Big Apple with Filter, discussing class, race, establishment and modern living. Continuing the theme of city, we retrace the road to Bristol with Portishead, Massive Attack, Neneh Cherry, DJ Andy Smith and newcomer SJ Esau, taking the occasional pit stop to examine what has made this otherwise forgettable British shipbuilding town so incredibly influential. Also, Big Apple mainstay El-P takes his own stab at city life while sipping a tall glass of bitter lemonade; Nick Cave, the eternal maverick, rides in on his new project Grinderman to discuss his disconnection blues and consider saving or leveling this Podunk town; we investigate the Swedish scene with its ambassadors of good vibes, Peter Bjorn & John and I’m From Barcelona; and we welcome the Kaiser Chiefs back stateside as they promise to behave themselves this time. Plus: the fairytale wedding of the Rosebuds, Field Music’s red shoe diaries, amazing stories from renowned character actor Stephen Tobolowsky, a crash-course on Monty Python from an expert, Dean & Britta return, Sub Pop poster artist Jeff Kleinsmith, discussions with the directors of 300 and Black Snake Moan, brilliant reviews, and introductions to Dr. Dog, RJD2, Annie Stela and Andrew Bird. And keep an out for LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy—he’s holding onto a swift punch to the sternum with your name on it.
