This six-sided, glass display case is 74-inches tall, floor-to-top, and 30-inches wide, corner to corner. There are five glass shelves, and a mirrored floor. When closed, the only door is sealed with a rubber gasket.
Three ceiling-mounted halogen lamps occasionally illuminate the collection, but are off 99.9% of the time. On the bottom shelf, I park two open glasses of tap water, to keep the ivory hydrated.
The two upper shelves show a mixture of mostly antique or modern commissioned scrimshawed whale teeth, with a few raw whale teeth, busks, etc. The white casting of the Sperm whale is by John Perry Studios.
The two middle shelves also contain mostly antique (>100-yo), vintage (50-yo to 100-yo), and contemporary (<50-yo) scrimshawed whale teeth. The four sailor figures are carved from whale ivory.
The bottom glass shelf & mirrored floor contain a mixture of carved Sperm whale ivory, carved baleen, scrimshawed walrus tusk ivory, and mammoth ivory.
This small display case shown is bedside, just in case I need to hug ivory late at night. Again, a mixture of matrix and styles.
