  • Collectible Star Wars Action Figures

    Most Valuable Star Wars Collectibles

Collectors seeking the best Star Wars collectibles (in terms of value and rarity) should look for the original issues by Kenner (in the US) and Palitoy (UK) products,  manufactured from 1977-1989.

Despite the legend that obsessively neat American mothers reveled in the throwing out of priceless Star Wars toys, the Vintage 1977 Kenner and Palitoy action figures are still readily available.  Figures in played-with condition seem to be going for anything from $6-25, depending, of course on the specific character, rarity and condition.  However, some characters, particularly Han Solo, in original, mint condition packaging have  command as much as $1,200.  The Holy Grail of Star Wars figures is the 1978 issue of Jawa in a vinyl cape.  Soon after its original release, the cape was changed to cloth.

Vintage Kenner and Palitoy Star Wars Action Figures

Kenner received the original licensing for the movie tie-in toys, but the success of the film caught them by surprise.  In order to be ready for the 1977 Christmas shopping season, Kenner sold 600,000 empty action figure boxes that contained IOU’s to be redeemed at a future date.  The 1978 holiday season saw their sales climb to over 42 million units.  The earliest releases included four characters, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and R2-D2, but that was soon expanded to twelve.  These figures came on cards in a blister pack, with pictures of the original 12 figures on the back of the cards.

By 1985, there were 111 Star Wars Action figures to choose from.

  • George Lucas Plans 'Star Wars' TV Series

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 17) - The Force may soon be coming to a television near you.

George Lucas said Tuesday he is planning a live-action television series spin-off of the "Star Wars" film franchise. Lucas told The Los Angeles Times he has "just begun work" on the series, which will not include the films' major characters Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader.

"The Skywalkers aren't in it, and it's about minor characters," Lucas told the Times.

Lucas wouldn't reveal details, but joked that the series would be about "the life of robots."

Lucas already has another television series in the works. Lucas Animation has been working for months on the computer-animated "Star Wars: The Clone Wars."

  • Comic-Con Figures and Statues

The most impressive displays (for me) were the action figure and statues booths. Sideshow Collectibles are just amazing - you have to see there stuff to believe it. full scale star wars props and large maqettes for aliens to name a few. Gentle Giant was another show stopper they had awesome Lord of the rings and harry potter displays - i got to see some preview figures for the 30 days of night movie - nice! On the large scale - they were some full size props galore.  The Golden compass movie had actual film props and a huge polar bear. Hot Wheels had the TV Batmobile and warner brothers had a full size Mach 5 from the upcoming speed racer movie. there was a full scale talking Dalek from Doctor Who  A full size lost ark of the covenant was pretty cool. some other figure companies that had nice displays were Mezco and Hasbro.

  • GI Joe - The Real American Hero

    by: Evelyn Williams

In 1964, Hasbro played with the idea of creating a new toy figure for boys to play with. The G.I. Joe action figures were created with the intention of creating more than just another " green army man". Hopeful that the stigma of boys playing with "dolls" would not take off, Hasbro was pleased when they saw that this toy was going to be very popular.

The original G.I. Joe was a 12 inch plastic figurine, with movable parts. The head had painted on hair, and they donned uniforms that resembled an uncanny liking to realistic uniforms. Hasbro knew that their creation for a new Army action figure would take off well, but was surprised at how many toys they actually sold on the market. These toys were popular among young boys, as they came with a name, rank, and serial number, giving the toy its own identity. Although many boys made it a point that no one called their GI Joe toys " dolls", they seemed to be just that. Like a regular doll, all dressed up for play with little girls as owners, GI Joe's could be dressed up too. The young boys that played with the GI Joe dolls could change the combat uniforms on their GI Joe dolls. The weapons that were used by the action figures could be interchanged with other toy weapons, creating many combinations of dress fatigue and weapons.

There are various forms of G.I. Joe dolls that are available as well. Dolls such as Colin Powell, and Bob Hope have fetched hefty prices on the market. The original G.I. Joe's in mint condition have sold for an upwards of $300.00, while newer collector dolls have sold for almost $100.00 as well. Over the years, the GI Joe action figures have taken on different forms, but one thing remains the same. The love of GI Joe has touched many children, and adults as well. As long as there is a camaraderie among the American people and the like, there will be GI Joe dolls to collect.
