VERY RARE - SCARCE EDITION FINE ORIGINAL LEATHER BINDING RARE FIRST EDITION - FOLIO 12.5" x 8.5" inches (LxB) CAMDEN'S ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE ON THE FRONT PASTEDOWN
FABLES OF AESOP and other Eminent Mythologists with Morals & Reflexions by Sir ROGER L'ESTRANGE
LONDON: Printed for R. Sare, et al. 1692. (Published date 1692). RARE FIRST EDITION. Folio 12.5" x 8.5" inches (LxB). Pp. [10], 480 pages + engraved frontispiece and a full page engraving of Aesop with all his animals. BINDING: Original contemporary full fine mottled calf leather, spine in 6 compartments, with black morocco label lettered in gold, all edges sprinkled red. This was the most complete collection of fables in England that had yet been published. Roger L'Estrange (1616-1704), tory journalist and pamphleteer, was notorious in his day for his many works against the dissenters and whigs. He received license of the press in 1692 to seize all seditious books and libels, apprehend the authors, and bring those responsible to "justice"; he used such license liberally, and in effect, reigned in terror over his adversaries until the time of William and Mary. First L'Estrange edition. His translation of Aesop was extremely popular & subsequent editions appeared in 1694, 1699, 1704, 1712, 1724, and in other editions down to the present day. [Wing A706].
