This Vintage English Vogue Smart Dressmaking Book was published by Conde Nast in the 1950's. It consists of 64 pages and has a soft cover. It is in very good condition with only a small amount of wear on the covers. The front has a few creases and the back has a small 1.5 cm tear. The spine has staples that have left minor discolouration. The first page has an introduction by Audrey Withers, Editor of English Vogue from 1940 until 1960. The intro is a fabulous testament to the era or as she describes it "these restricted days". She espouses practicality, individuality and economy unlike current issues of Vogue I'm sure. The pages inside cover all aspects of equipment, laying and cutting of patterns, seams, darts, hems, piping, 5 pages of sleeves, hems, pockets, tucking and pleating etc. There are single colour diagrams on all pages. My favourite page is entitled "For a professional look-do and don't" and it is surgical in its attention to detail. If like me, you sew and love the fashion of the era, you will love this publication. The last few pages contain some lovely ads for threads and zips.
