Petroliana, automobilia enamel signs price report, Matthews Auction Company
America
has been in love with the automobile since we first started traveling
our dirt horse roads with it back in the early 1900s. It’s hard to
think of life without the car, and it’s been a romance that has lost
little through the years.
Naturally, something so beloved would
spark an interest in all things related to it, and what is more closely
related to the automobile than the fuel needed to run it. It’s no
wonder then that antique petroliana is a very popular area of
collecting.
Especially popular in this field are antique enamel signs.
It’s
hard to believe the “Big Oil” of today, came from companies we so
dearly revered. Traveling through any U.S. town, you would see these
enamel signs sporting the logos of Texaco Fire-Chief and Sky-Chief,
Esso, Sunoco,Penn,Energee and others.
One pump filling
stations usually always had one on the side of the building, and they
have disappeared along with full service and a windshield washing.
But,
although they have disappeared from the sides of these old buildings,
not many were thrown away. Most of the owners of these had the pride
and intuition to save them, realizing they’d be in demand again some
day, and they of course are. In fact they’re a red hot collectible.
