Feature Article: Islamic sleeper priced at £100 in January to be auctioned for £3 million in October
The Art Newspaper-
An extremely rare Islamic rock crystal ewer, which was sold earlier
this year by a Somerset auction house as a "French claret jug" with an
upper estimate of £200, is to be offered at Christie's London on 7
October, for £3m.
The ewer was presumably purchased by the patriarch of the English
family that now owns the piece around the year 1850. It was then sent
to Sèvres, where it was repaired and mounted in gold and enamel by the
important French jeweler, Jean-Valentin Morel.
As the years
wore on, much of the information associated with the ewer was lost, and
when it came time for the family to sell the ewer in January, they had
no idea of its value. It was placed up for auction at Christie's
London as a "French claret jug", with an upper estimate of just £200. The Art Newspaper
reports that shortly after the sale of the ewer, its origin and true
value was rediscovered, the sale annulled and the ewer returned to its
original owner.
Now valued at an incredible £5M guide value,
the ewer is available to be purchased by museums or, if it should
remain unsold, will be auctioned off by Christie's London on October 7.

Featured Artist: Iolanda Lagana

Iolanda Lagana
is an artist from San Remo, Italy and is based out of Paris, France.
Her art is fresh, expressive, and vibrant. I love her color
combinations, and the way the art takes on a carefree quality. The
painting pictured at right is entitled "Masque Vénitien"
(Venitian Mask) and is part of her collection of original art. She
also has a collection called "Progressive Art" which is also visually
stunning. In particular, there is a work called "Ange et Démon" (Angel and Demon), which is arresting to say the least. You can view her work by clicking on any of the links, or click here to view her profile. |

Hi
I'm James,
your art community manager. I am new to the iTaggit team
and have really enjoyed browsing through all of your collections.
There are some amazing pieces on display, and even more housed within
private collections. In this newsletter, I will be highlighting one
user's collection, as well as one true work of art.
There is a stir in the art community as London-based Dali-Dealer, Stan Lauryssens, claims in his new book Dali and I
that 75% of Dali's paintings were not produced by the artist himself.
Lauryssens asserts that famous Spanish painter Salvador Dali actually
had a team of assistants producing his work long after the artist had
lost his creativity. One can only speculate about how this revelation,
if true, will affect the value of Dali's works. Read more at Artdaily.org.

Art Treasures
Newsletter May 2008 |

Hi I'm Jamie, your art community manager. There have been lots of exciting things going on in the art world lately. Banksy's Laugh Now
was sold at auction in London for almost $500,000, the final portrait
that actor Heath Ledger sat for is up for Australia's 2008 Archibald
Prize, and the art world is in turmoil over the true ownership of the
looted art being exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts. In addition,
the recent Christie's Art Auction saw record prices coming from foreign
collectors! Click here for the story from Reuters.

Blue Growth
This month's featured item is a beautiful painting that I found while browsing iTaggit's art section. The painting is called Blue Growth, and you can find it in itaggitsister's
collection. She is not only the owner of the painting, but also the
artist. She did the painting between 2003-2007 and used oil on canvas.
I think it is a wonderful painting, and I'd love to have something like
it for my collection!
