Featured Article:  Man Arrested in Theft of Rare Shakspeare Folio.

A 400-year-old volume of Shakespeare, valued at £15 million ($30 million), has been recovered after a man asked the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC to have it verified as genuine.

The First Folio edition of 1623 is among the rarest books ever printed and scholars consider it to be one of the most important printed books in English.  It was stolen over a decade ago, along with six other centuries-old books and manuscripts, from a display case at the Durham University library in Northern England.

Durham Police have arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with the crime.  To view the full article, click here.

Some stand-outs include: War Journal: My 5 Years in Iraq by reporter Richard Engel, Executricks, or How to Retire While You're Still Working by Stanley Bing, and Me of Little Faith by Lewis Black.

In other book-related news, Beirut-born writer Rawi Hage won one of the world's most lucrative literary prizes Thursday for his debut novel, De Niro's Game, about two childhood friends who take different paths to survive amid civil war in the Lebanese capital.  Five judges from Ireland, Britain, Spain and the United States selected Hage for the $155,000 IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

    5 little pigs5 Little Pigs (1890)

alegalangel's 1st edition antique children's book, 5 Little Pigs, was published in 1890.  With a cloth cover binding and linen pages, it is certainly a throw-back to another era.  Among collectors, it is a highly sought-after collectible, and this copy is in great condition.  Books like these have long commanded a high value from those who wish to collect them because of their beautifully drawn art, rarity, and appeal to both children and children at heart.  If you would like an item or collection featured in an upcoming newsletter, please feel free to send me a message.

Featured ItemA People's History of the United States

A People's History of the United States, by Howard Zinn, can be found in btodd12's book collection.  Spanning from Columbus' arrival to the Clinton Administration, Zinn tells the history of the U.S. through the often unheard voices of the oppressed.  Eric Foner of the New York Times Book Review says, "Those accustomed to the texts of an earlier generation, in which the rise of American democracy and the growth of national power were the embodiment of progress, may be startled by Professor Zinn's narrative."  This sounds like a must-read for anyone interested in the history and cultures of the United States' past!

    The KM Book Collection

AvonThe KM Book Collection, created by user Kla11, has a wide variety of books geared towards the multi-interests of women, mixed in with a few classics such as Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. Her Harlequin Nascar series is what caught my eye. It might catch yours too!

    Tips on protecting your Books

The repeated incorrect handling and storage of a book can quickly transform a new book into a worn or even an unusable one. For prolonging book life, try these tips.

    ·        Avoid keeping your book in extreme environments. High humidity in an attic or basement can promote mold growth, cockle pages, and attract insects. Low humidity, such as above a hot radiator, can dry out leather bindings.

    ·        Avoid keeping your books in direct sun-light. The large ultraviolet (UV) component will fade leather and cloth.

    ·        To prevent warping of books, try to place similar sized books next to each other on the shelf vertically, packing them neither too loosely or tightly together.
