June 15th will likely bring about another summer box office hit in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Fantastic Four was the first superhero team created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby in 1961. Fantastic Four broke with the conventional superhero mentality of the time and formed a dysfunctional family whose members would bicker, eschew anonymity, and maintain a public celebrity status.

The first Fantastic Four movie in the series broke out onto the silver screen in 2005. Heroes Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Ben Grimm (The Thing), and Sue (Invisible Woman) and Johnny Storm (Human Torch) were played by Ioan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis, Jessica Alba, and Chris Evans. Mad man Victor von Doom (Doctor Doom), played by Julian McMahon, will have villainous company in this sequel in Norrin Radd (Silver Surfer), whose motions will be captured by Doug Jones, and voice will be that of Laurence Fishburne. Also appearing will be Galactica, an entity that devours worlds. Hopefully our heroins can save the day and leave room for a third chapter in the future.

Other Marvel comics that have been made into movie series include Blade, X-men, The Hulk, Spider-Man, The Punisher, and Daredevil.
