In my last post, Protecting your Possessions, I touched on the importance of keeping digital records of your valuables and collectibles for insurance purposes. Today, I would like to expand on the topic of digitizing your collection and give you some tips on how to keep thorough, detailed records of your items.
If you have ever had to file a police report (we hope not) or make a claim through your insurance company, then you know it’s all about the details, details, details! The more detailed you are in the documentation of your valuables, the less hassle for you should something happen to your treasured items! And don’t forget: The safest place to document your items is online (preferably at iTaggit.com). This way, your documentation will never be lost and printing our reports for your insurance company will be a cinch!
Here are some helpful hints and tips on how to keep perfect records of your valuables and collectibles:
When taking photos of your items to add to your iTaggit page…
· Make sure you take a photo from many different angles
· Make sure the lighting is as natural as possible
· Take close-up photos of your item to show the detail. For example, if the item you are photographing is a painting, it is important to make sure the author’s signature is visible in the photograph
· If it is an album of collectibles, such as postcards, stamps, coins, etc., make sure you photograph every page
When scanning documentation to add to your item pages on iTaggit, don’t forget…
· The proof of purchase documentation – scan all receipts for each item. This includes any repair or restoration receipts. Keeping accurate records will help you to determine the value of your item in the future. Also, don’t forget to Use iTaggit’s ValueRangeiT tool (coming soon!) to value your item with one click!
· Written appraisals
· Serial Numbers or Ownership Marks – Make sure to photograph these as well
