If there is one thing about us collectors, it’s that we area passionate group of people. We are passionate about our hobbies and passionate about our belongings. What would be the point of dedicating our precious time to acquiring our collectibles and valuables if we just threw them in a box in the attic and didn’t take the time to enjoy and preserve them? Even more importantly, keeping our collectibles well preserved will give us the ability to pass them down to our loved ones so that they may enjoy them for years to come.
Here are a few important things we can do to ensure proper care and preservation of our future family heirlooms:
· If you receive your item in a box, it’s best to keep it. Keeping the box will add to the item’s value and give you a secure, protective place to keep it should you move or decide to keep it in storage. If your item did not come with a box, archival boxes are available for purchase at craft stores.
· If you want to show off your item, keep it in a glass cabinet, display case, or hutch. Keeping your item in an enclosed area rather than out in the open protects it from dust, smoke, and other particles in the air that could potentially damage your item. It can also prevent someone from knocking over your precious possession!
· Store your items in a place that doesn’t receive direct sunlight. If you are displaying your items, make sure they do not receive direct sunlight or direct light of any kind as the sun could damage or fade your item.
· Make sure your storage area is climate controlled. If you are going to store your items (in a protective box, of course!), make sure that the room is climate controlled. This especially applies to paper collectibles such as postcards and letters. Leaving your collectibles in a damp, hot, or cold environment can lead to mold and other damage.
· If you are preserving paper collectibles or art, be sure to keep them in an album or in a frame. Never laminate your paper items. The heat and chemicals from the lamination process could damage your items. Also, be sure to keep them out of damp areas or direct sunlight.
· A good rule of thumb when it comes to your valuables: “Do no do anything that cannot be undone!”
You can only do so much physically to protect and preserve your valuables - That’s why it is important to properly document your items online and have them insured!
