Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock – A blog series on everything you need to know about collecting and maintaining antique clocks!

Cuckoo! Cuckoo!  I am pretty sure that you have heard that sound at least once in your life, whether it be in our grandparents home, your parents home, or your own.  The art of clock making has been around for hundreds of years, thousands of minutes, and millions of seconds.  And the antique clock collectors’ attention hasn’t waned a bit!  Antique clocks continue to be one of the most popular searches on our site, so today, I have chosen to divert my attention to these beautiful works of art and give you some helpful hints on collecting and maintaining antique clocks.

For this blog, I am going to focus on starting you Antique Clock Collection.  Tune in on Wednesday where I will talk about valuing, repairing, and maintaining your Antique Clocks.

BEGINNING YOUR ANTIQUE CLOCK COLLECTION

*  Decide what kind of antique clock collection you want to start.  There are hundreds of different brands and many different styles and types of antique clocks to choose from.  If you aren’t sure what type you are interested in collecting, browse some local antique stores or search the ‘net for “antique clocks” and see what pops up!  Websites such as www.antiqueclockspriceguide.com/ and www.antique-collectable-clock.com/ are good places to start.

*  Set your budget.  Antique clocks can be pricey items – up to a few thousand dollars per clock if you are into serious clocks such as an original Seth Thomas Sonora Westminster.  Don’t be upset if this isn’t the price you were expecting to pay per collectible, however!  You can definitely find interesting and beautiful antique clocks for much lower than this.  It is very important to decide how much you want to spend a month on our collection or your collection will be collecting ALL of your hard earned money!  It can get very addicting!

*  Decide if you are willing to buy a beautiful antique timepiece that may need a little fixing up!
Like anything else, you can find some great deals on clocks that need a little extra TLC.  You will find many of these ”fixer-uppers” at you local or online antique stores.  Do not fear the slightly broken, my friends!  If you are unsure of where to start when repairing the beautiful but broken clock you got for a screaming deal, check out a book on the subject.  CLICK HERE for some great book options on repairing antique clocks courtesy of amazon.com.  Also, check out Friday’s blog on where to find antique clock parts!

* Shop, Shop, Shop!  Check out local antique shops for an up close and personal look at your future antique clock. Browse your phone book to find stores in your area. Also, don’t forget about online auction powerhouse eBay.com!  This website is a no-fail place to finding unique and rare items at competitive prices.  The iTaggit Collections for great deals, as well.  Another great online classified site is clockpost.com.  ClockPost.com is a website dedicated solely to the buying and selling of antique clocks.  Other great places to shop around in for some great deals include craigslist.org and even your local Salvation Army stores.  You never know what kind of vintage clock you could find at a fantastic price!  It is all about the hunt!

Remember to tune in on Wednesday where I will talk about valuing, repairing, and maintaining your Antique Clocks!
