Genuine, vintage engagement rings are all the rage right now in the bridal jewelry market. Reproductions of timeless styles are taking jewelry stores all over the country by storm. If you are a collector, however, with a soft spot for antiques like me, it’s not the reproductions you are seeking, but the uniqueness of n original piece. Whether you are searching for a real vintage engagement ring to make you special day that much more significant, or are just in the market to collect beautiful pieces of the past to add to your jewelry collection, collecting vintage engagement rings is a fun and exciting hobby. Before you begin your collection or your search for the perfect ring, its always good to know a little bit about the history of what you are buying!
The History of the Engagement Ring

Engagement and wedding rings have a long history.
Rings have been used as symbolic tokens for centuries, and understanding engagement ring history can help a couple realize just how significant these pieces of jewelry are. Furthermore, couples interested in antique rings may find a greater appreciation for the changing styles knowing how the jewelry’s history has evolved.
Engagement Ring History: Origins
The initial origins of engagement and wedding rings are the same. The earliest uses of symbolic rings are attributed to different peoples, including the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians. Betrothal rings were meant to symbolize a woman’s connection to the man who would become her husband, though the arrangement was more of a business proposition than a romantic union. Romans used iron rings to symbolize strength and permanence, and the Greeks are credited with the initial idea to wear the ring on the fourth finger of the left hand, where the “vena amoris” or vein of love was supposed to connect to the heart.
During the ninth century, Pope Nicolas I endorsed the idea of engagement rings by making a gold ring a betrothal requirement to demonstrate the groom’s wealth and ability to care for a wife. In 1215, Pope Innocent III made a similar declaration though the rings could consist of different metals, including silver and iron, and the rings were meant to be worn during a longer engagement period.
Gemstone Rings
Established engagement ring history has theorized that the first rings may have been made from leather, plants, or other degradable material that served not only to symbolize a union between two people, but also their connection with the land that sustained them. As time passed, metal rings eventually became more elaborate, finally incorporating gemstones to add a measure of distinction and beauty. Symbolic patterns of birthstones were often used to illustrate the couple’s parents as well as the couple themselves. For centuries, however, diamonds were too rare and expensive to be widely available or affordable.
The First Diamond Engagement Ring
The first recorded diamond engagement ring was given to Mary of Burgundy by her betrothed, Archduke Maximillian of Austria, in 1477. Few details are known about the ring itself, but diamonds were considered at the time to have magical powers relative to love, purity, and fidelity – the same characteristics they symbolize today.
In the late 19th century, extensive diamond deposits were discovered in Africa, effectively making the gems more widely available and cheaper for the general public to purchase. Because of the sudden abundance of diamonds, designs became more elaborate and intricate, and more brides-to-be began to receive diamond engagement rings.
History of Men’s Rings
The story of men’s engagement ring history is far shorter. For centuries, only women received either engagement or wedding rings, but today the vast majority of men wear wedding rings, and an increasing number also receive engagement rings. This trend began during World War II, when many men were faced with years separated from their loved ones, and simple rings served as reminders about the people they’d left behind. It has taken still longer for diamonds to be incorporated into men’s rings, but many masculine diamond rings are available today.
Engagement Ring History in the United States
Thimbles were practical alternatives to engagement rings. The Puritans who helped colonize the United States refused to wear most jewelry, including wedding and engagement rings, because such baubles were considered ostentatious and frivolous. Instead, a betrothed couple would exchange a thimble – a practical item a young woman could use as she sewed linens and clothing for her dowry. After the wedding, the thimble’s cup was often cut off (symbolizing that her dowry was complete), and the rim could be worn as a ring.
Non-diamond engagement rings have been popular throughout most of the United States’ history because of their lower expense and easier availability: this was especially critical during westward expansion and pioneer days when any ring was costly. During the 1920s, art deco designs were particularly popular because of their modern symmetry and flashy color contrasts, while smaller rings and more elaborate filigree designs were popular during the Great Depression because of their affordability. During World War II, at the same time many men began wearing wedding rings, platinum rings were prohibited (the metal being necessary for military uses), and many more gold and silver rings were designed.
The Future of Engagement and Wedding Rings
Despite the varied nature of wedding and engagement ring history, today’s trends are clear: custom rings unique to the couple are more popular than ever, as are contemporary styles that illustrate the promise of a future that is brighter than ever. Even as diamond jewelry continues to evolve, its ties to historical tradition remain intact, and couples continue to honor that history by exchanging rings as they form their own traditions.

A vintage engagement ring is one gift which anyone can give to his beloved and feel proud of thanks to intrinsic charm, uniqueness and beauty as well as history. Vintage engagement rings are actually those that are known to be more than approximately fifty years old. Over the course of the years there were various eras that had their very own fashion in rings and jewellery designs which means that when looking for a vintage ring, you will be met with all kinds of options based on the eras that you may be interested in. During 1900 to 1920 that was Edwadian period, the material used for making rings those times was platinum, light and soft designs were used those days. Exotic laces, piercing fronts were used for mounting on top of the ring those days. Rose colored diamonds were very much fashion those day as well. Then there were also Victorian designs in rings in Victorian era. This era also used many diamonds and incorporated them into sophisticated designs. The use of pearls was also very dominant during the Victorian era. A classic Victorian engagement ring is Tiffany six pronged diamond ring.
Then there was the colourful Art Deco period between 1920 to 1930. During this era the use of machinery came into play and greatly influenced the styles of rings and everything else for that matter! Master pieces were created in this era using multi coloured gemstone, diamond and platinum for a truly sparkling effect to the rings. In this era there was a shift from a softer look to a much harder and unusual look of rings. Today also, art deco rings are by far the most popular style in vintage engagement rings because the clear lines were visible from the shift in patterns of ring making. It led to a drift towards a much more fashion forward style in not only rings but in other jewellery as well. There was much personification of art and creativity and human imagination implemented into the rings and jewellery designed during this era making it no wonder that they are still so popular and even considered trendy in today’s society.
These rings are found in many places like jewellery shops, estate sales, online web auctions and more. One word of caution though; buyers should be very cautious while buying their rings due to the amount of fraud. Sure you can knowingly buy a reproduction because you want the look without the price, but if you are on the market for a true vintage engagement ring then you need to be sure that you are indeed getting the authentic ring that you are paying for. Buyers should pay special heed towards the shop from where they are buying their product. Hang onto your receipt and do NOT buy without an appraisal certificate that will vouch for the ring’s description, clarity, size, age, cut, colour, condition etc. Precious stones should be checked for cracks and splits as softer stones can be easily damaged. And make sure that any inclusions in stones are indeed noted on your appraisal certificate as well.
Once you do finally have your vintage engagement ring in your possession, be sure that when cleaning the jewellery that proper care is used based on suggestions from your jeweller so that you can keep your vintage ring looking perfect for many lifetimes to come.
Tips for Buying A Vintage Engagement Ring
•Examine the quality of the ring. If you are in the market for a genuine antique, you have to look out for replicas and reproductions. Inspect the ring with a magnifying glass and do not forget to check the underside of the ring. Vintage engagement rings are known for beautiful and detailed craftsmanship, so the underside of the ring should parallel the quality of the top and outside of the ring. Inspect the condition of the ring. Are the prongs securing the center diamond well? Are the smaller accent diamonds secure as well? Are there any missing? Does the ring look worn beyond repair? Taking your ring to a jeweler to reinforce any loose prongs is always a good idea!
•Remember the 4 Cs of a Diamond: color, cut, clarity, and carat. The stones is the centerpiece of the ring. Do not get so caught up in the setting that you do not carefully examine the ring’s diamonds! That being said, the overall beauty of the ring is just as important. Generally, the more devoid of color a diamond is, the higher the quality. The cut should be flawless and the size should be exactly what you are looking for before you make such an important investment!
•Make sure you find a ring that fits your finger – and I don’t mean by the circumference! An engagement ring should make your hand look “light and elegant.” If you have long, slim fingers, a marquise or pear cut will flatter your finger the most. If your fingers are short and wide, consider a ring with much detail around the center stone to make you fingers appear slimmer.
How to Buy Vintage Engagement Rings
•Check out local antique and pawn shops for unique finds. Brides, I know that shopping in a pawn shop for your engagement ring may not seem like the most glamorous thing in the world, but you can really find some great pieces for great prices at places like these. It is a sad truth but honestly, people are having to sell and pawn their belongings left and right in this tough economy. The ring of your dreams could be just around the corner. No one will know where it came from but you and your fiancé, anyway!
•Check out eBay.com and other online auction sites to find one-of-a-kind antiques. Not only can you buy directly from the seller, but many antiques vendors sell their inventory through eBay as well. Make sure you get the full information on the return policy, as well as certification papers on the diamonds. A good rule of thumb when shopping on eBay is to always try to get the seller on the phone to ask questions. Shady characters with less than good intentions will avoid this type of communication for the most part. It is much easier to lie to someone though email than it is face-to-face or over the phone.
•Look for local estate sales and your local classified ads for listings. The best part about buying from an estate sell is that more likely than not, the seller will know the history of your ring, making it all the more romantic and special. •Check online jewelry vendors offering vintage jewelry. These sites come well equipped with lots of information and appraisals. These are great sources as well.
