Feature Story: Obama Sports Cards, Autographs Get Boost

    Sports Collectors Daily -

The historical significance of Tuesday's election is obvious.  The first African-American to be elected President of the United States is a momentous occasion in this country.  As a result, eBayers are cashing in on Obama memorabilia and autographs and realizing very high prices.
    Obama
Earlier this year, user beanbone blogged about Upper Deck's release of a sub-set called Presidential Predictors featuring this year's candidates for the oval office (click here to read the blog).  This was just one of many such blogs highlighting the collectibilty of Presidential memorabilia.  If you were one of the ones who planned ahead and began to collect any of the Presidential Sports Cards or autographs, now may be one of the best times to turn a profit.

As reported by Sports Collectors Daily on Wednesday, a 2008 Topps cut signature card (#2 of 15) sold for $3000. Topps Update Obama Presidential Pick cards were moving briskly at $200-250. eTopps cards featuring the 44th President were selling for between $60 and $100. A signed jersey, obtained by a supporter during the campaign brought $1400.

If you would like to see what your Presidential sports memorabila is worth, try searching iTaggit's eBay Historical Value Estimator to see the results of similar completed auctions.  You may also want to keep an eye on prices as we near innauguration day, as prices are sure to spike at that time as well.

OJThis month, I am featuring user vielec's extensive collection of Football Cards.  This collection encompasses most teams and some great players from the late 1970's.  Browsing through this collection, I was most struck by the grisly beards donned by many players in this era.  You just do not see beards like these on today's play-makers.  This is a really fun collection to look through, and I encourage any fans of football or card collection to check it out.  To do so, simply click here.

Feature Story: Arkansas man buys baseball card for $1.62 Million!
    Honus Wagner
An Arkansas man bought a 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card for $1.62 million at a memorabilia auction in Chicago, a sports auction company said Saturday. Though the record price for a baseball card is $2.8 million, paid in 2007 for a near-mint condition Wagner card released in 1909, collector John Rogers, 35, of North Little Rock, Ark., said his winning bid for the T206 Wagner card is the realization of a decades-long dream.

"Since I was 8 years old, I've hoped and dreamed that one day I'd be able to get one," Rogers said.

    Welcome!

June was a good month to invest in quality memorabilia. The NBA had two storied franchises reach the finals, as the Boston Celtics beat the LA Lakers for their record 17th championship. Game worn jerseys appear to be the big sellers from this series. In addition, Tiger Woods won one of the most memorable US Open's in history. So memorable that someone sold an apple core on eBay (for $36,000) that Woods allegedly tossed during the tournament!

If you missed out on the memorabilia in June, don't worry, we have got you covered. The best event to get MLB memorabilia this month will be held at Yankee Stadium. Not only is this the last season at Yankee Stadium, but on July 14th, the Home Run Derby comes to town. If you don't catch a ball that night, try and get to the 79th All-Star game which will be held on the following night.

    NBA Sells Finals Memorabilia

The NBA recently held two live auctions to sell memorabilia from the 2008 Finals. The first auction included game worn jerseys from Game 1. The highest priced item in this auction was Kevin Garnett's home white Jersey. After 113 bids for the jersey, it sold for a whopping $31,070. Kobe Bryant's road purple jersey received the highest bid of any Laker, with a winning bid of $19,040. The auction brought in a total of $112,516.77, with the Celtics jersey's generating $79,398.10 of that.

The second auction included memorabilia from Game 3 of the finals. Kobe Bryant was the victor on this night, as his gold home jersey had a winning bid of $25,020. Garnett's green away jersey sold for $20,070, and Finals MVP, Paul Pierce's green away jersey brought in $16,120. This auction brought in a total of $114,024.79 making the combined total from both auctions, $226,540. The Celtic's again beat out the Laker's in auction 2, as $70,867.10 of the total proceeds was generated from their jerseys.

WEEI radio, a Boston based sports broadcast, auctioned off Doc Rivers' orange Gatorade, soaked shirt from Game 6. The shirt was signed by both Rivers' and Paul Pierce, and would also include the Gatorade bucket. The station announced that the proceeds from this item would benefit the Shamrock Foundation, a Celtic's charity. The winning bid on this item was for $55,000.

    Eric

Expert Eric here, and I am back with a recap of this month in sports!
May was an exciting month in the sport's world. Both the NBA and NHL had great playoff seasons and now we're down to the final two. I thought the Red Wings had wrapped up their US-leading 11th Stanley Cup Monday night, but the Penguins showed great determination in at least extending this series to game 6. We'll see if Sidney Crosby and the Penguins can push the series to seven games on Wednesday night.

It has been 21 years since they last met in the finals, but the NBA will renew one of its greatest rivalries today when the LA Lakers meet the Boston Celtics. These two teams have met a total of 10 times in the Finals, with the Celtics holding an 8-2 advantage. Considering where both of these teams started before the season, not to many people would have predicted this match up. Fueled by a couple of really good trades, each team is now poised to make history.

The best kept secret in sports might be the most exciting event of June. Euro 2008 is a sixteen nation soccer tournament that will crown the best soccer nation in Europe. The reigning champs, Greece are back as well as the World Cup Champs, Italy. The tournament starts on June 7th and will be co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland.

Be on the lookout for Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Sydney Crosby, and International Soccer memorabilia.  Once these series' and tournaments have finished, the value of these items will surely rise.  If you are the owner of relavent items, feel free to post them on the site and share them with friends.

    This Month's Tips

Here are some tips for sports card collecting:
    • Decide what you want to collect - new cards, old cards, cards from one company, cards of one team or one player. The options and varieties are endless!
    • Try auction sites such as eBay to purchase cards. You can definitely get some great deals.
    • Remember to store your cards safely - sturdy pine boxes and/or mylar holders work well. If you want to "show" your cards or plan on looking at them often, plastic sheets, which generally hold nine cards per page, per side, are often best.
    • And finally, don't forget to share your cards with the iTaggit community!

Tips on protecting your Baseball Cards
Since baseball cards seem to be the theme of this month, I'll leave you with a few tips on protecting the value of your cards.

    1. Organize your cards! What if one of your rookie cards goes from $.25 to $50 and you can't find your card. Group your cards in an easy way for you to find them- i.e. by team, manufacturer, etc.

2.Store your cards in a cool, dry place. Humidity and temperature extremes are the enemies of your cards.

    3. DO NOT bend the corners of the cards when placing them in their sleeves. This happens all the time, the point of putting them in the sleeve is to preserve the value. Be sure your fingerprints aren't left on the card either!
